So maybe I turned some of you off with the post about ballet. I know it's certainly not for everyone.
On the completely opposite end of the spectrum, neither is Lincoln Theater. This is not a place where you go to wear a fancy gown and sip champagne. Lincoln Theater is where you go to hear groundbreaking local bands and be packed in with strangers close enough to breathe their sweat. If, the next morning, you still have hearing in both ears and your mouth doesn't taste like an ashtray (even though the building is no-smoking), then you've experienced it wrong.
And, I'm not going to lie, I love it.
The first time I went to Lincoln Theater was to cheer for some friends competing in a Battle of the Bands. I was underage, so I had to pay an extra $2 at the door and get those embarrassing "X"s drawn on my hands so no one would serve me drinks.
I spent the next three hours packed in with a few hundred strangers, screaming my throat hoarse and dancing in the little bit of space I had to move. And it was one of the best nights of my high school-life. I was amazed at the depth of the local talent. I knew from prior experience that my friends' band was good, but I didn't expect every band to be good.
And creative! Nothing I heard there was like anything that was playing on the radio at the time. (One band mixed into one of their songs the chorus of the rap song "Forgot About Dre". Only they did it in harmony and playing bongos for accompaniment.)
If you've never experienced Lincoln Theater firsthand, you are doing yourself a grave disservice. They always have a slew of shows coming up, so check their schedule and decide who you want to see. Whatever your musical tastes, they'll have something for you. And go ahead and buy those tickets ahead of time. No sense getting downtown and findnig parking just to be turned away at the door.
